Sarah Joseph OBE, is a writer, broadcaster, internationally recognised public speaker, and entrepreneur.

Renowned for her independent and innovative thinking, she has addressed audiences the world over. Her audiences are eclectic – from South Asia’s leading CEOs at the Khazanah Mega Trends Forum in Malaysia to worshipers at Westminster Abbey in London; from educationalists in Singapore to academics in Georgetown University in Washington.

A graduate of King’s College London’s department of Theology and Religious Studies, Sarah has spent almost 25 years in various forms of media. In 2003 she founded emel – a brand which first created the concept and then detailed the progression of Muslim Lifestyle. The brand fundamentally changed the way Muslims were marketed to, and made Sarah an expert in contemporary Muslim consumers and ethics. Sarah trained numerous creative teams in both the written word and design. She has conceptualised and developed multiple publications and websites, for her own company and for others. She says her favourite emel issues include the “EcoJihad” issues that raise issues of environmental stewardship from a Muslim perspective.

Following her daughter’s diagnosis with a life threatening and complex illness which meant she was out of school for several years, Sarah became impassioned about the needs of Out of School Children. She consulted for an international NGO on the issue, and then started The Hope Curriculum (THC). Sarah says of this, “UNESCO estimates there are 263 million Out of School Children. Even in the UK we see children in long term hospitalisation because of illness, and pupil referral units because of behavioural breakdowns often caused by special needs, and social disadvantage. These children are often left with sub-standard teaching, or no teaching at all. THC aims to bring the very best quality teachers to these children on a website designed and conceptualised by media professionals. We have to use technology to bring education to scale.”

Sarah was awarded an OBE in the June 2004 Queen’s Birthday Honour’s List for services to interfaith dialogue and the promotion of women’s rights. She has been listed as one of the UK’s most powerful Muslims in the Muslim Power 100 by Carter Andersen, one of Europe’s 40 most influential leaders under 40 by EuropaNova, and one of the World’s 500 most influential Muslims by Georgetown University and the Jordanian Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre.

She lives in London with her husband, three children, dog, cat, and chickens.
